Um, so in Parashat Balak, the Jews complain about religion and faith.
Yeah, about the food, the time, um, they spend journeying the desert, pretty much everything.
It makes you wonder, is complaining always bad?
I don't think so.
Complaining can mean something's wrong, but in the parashah, I feel like the people aren't trying to fix anything.
Exactly.
They're not saying, "How can this be better?" They're saying, "And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be our prey? Were it not be better for us to return to, into Egypt?" And they said, one to, uh, one or, one to another, "Let, let us make a captain, and let us return to Egypt."
Which is wild, because Egypt was slavery.
They forget how bad it was because the desert is uncomfortable.
That actually feels really relatable.
Sometimes when things are hard, we complain instead of dealing with the challenge.
And Jews still complain today about religion, faith, and tradition.
