And if you've never heard the term emotional incest before, I want to clarify right from the beginning, we are not talking about sexual abuse.

Emotional incest occurs when a parent, a mother in the cases we'll discuss today, uses a child to meet her emotional needs that should be met by another adult.

A best friend, a therapist, a protector, a source of emotional support, and in many ways can manifest as a substitute spouse.

And while it may not look abusive from the outside, the damage it creates can be profound and lifelong.

One of the reasons this dynamic is so difficult to recognize is because it's often disguised as love.

people look at the relationship and think what a close mother and son relationship they see frequent phone calls they see constant involvement they see a son who is devoted to his mother and on the surface that may even look admirable but underneath that apparent closeness is often something much darker Because what is being presented as love is actually enmeshment.

And what is being presented as closeness is frequently a complete absence of healthy boundaries.

His role is to meet her needs, to comfort her, to validate her, to support her, to remain emotionally available to her.

And because of that, the child's development becomes distorted from a very early age.
