A Piece Of Ground Zero

Twenty five years after 9/11, one moment at Ground Zero still replays in my mind like it happened yesterday. I went because I needed to see the real place, not the TV version. The site was still raw, with twisted steel, broken concrete, and a silence that felt like an open wound. I asked a police officer for a rock from inside the fence, the kind of small object you hold when your brain can’t quite hold what you’re seeing. He came back with something I never expected: two pieces of marble wall from where Tower 2 had stood, actual fragments from the World Trade Center. As I stood there stunned, I noticed a young boy with his grandparents pointing to the same spot. I overheard the words no child should have to absorb: “That’s where your dad died.” In that instant, history stopped being history and became one family’s grief right beside mine. I tell the story of giving that boy one of those marble pieces, of the photo his grandparents asked for, and of how I later lost my own fragment in a wreck but never lost the memory.
