Today, I'm truly excited to welcome one of the world's leading experts on female athlete physiology, Dr. Kate Ackerman.

Dr. Ackerman is a physician, researcher, and clinician who is the co-founder and director of the Women's Health and Sports Performance Institute, as well as an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

She also founded and formerly directed the Female Athlete Program at Boston Children Hospital.

She has spent her career at the intersection of endocrinology, sports medicine, and exercise physiology, working with everyone from elite Olympians to everyday women who want to train intelligently across the different stages of life.

What makes Dr. Ackerman's work so important is her deep focus on areas that have historically been understudied, how the female hormone environment, energy availability, and menstrual cycle influences muscle, bone, and performance outcomes.

She's been at the forefront of research on relative energy deficiency in sport, bone stress injuries, and how to optimize training and nutrition for women across the lifespan, from adolescence through pregnancy and into menopause.

Where there have been gaps in our understanding on female physiology in sport, Dr. Ackerman has built her career around closing them.

Her work has shaped the international consensus statements, changed clinical practice, and given coaches and athletes evidence-based answers to questions that, until recently, simply did not have them.

In today's conversation, we cover relative energy deficiency in sport, what it is, why the old female athlete triad model wasn't enough, and what happens physiologically when an athlete's energy intake doesn't match what she's expending.

We talk about bone health, hormones, and her landmark research showing that transdermal estrogen, not the oral contraceptive pill, is what rebuilds bone in amenorrheic athletes.
