Picture a gathering with people you know.
The conversation moves easily from one story to another.
Someone close to you starts describing something you told them in confidence.
You recognize the opening before anybody else understands the story.
You want to interrupt, but you lose a second looking for the right words.
In that second, they tell it.
Someone laughs.
You smile too, almost automatically.
You don't want to become the person who makes the whole room awkward.
Inside, you're thinking that you trusted them.
Some parts of your life weren't supposed to become material for a good story.
The conversation moves on.
Everyone else seems comfortable.
You become intensely aware of where your hands are, whether your face looks upset, whether someone might ask what's wrong.
You're managing the room's comfort while trying to find somewhere to put your own hurt.
Later, someone asks if you're okay.
You say you're just tired.
Tired feels easier to explain than hurt, especially when you're afraid the hurt will be dismissed.
Once you're alone, you replay it.
First you're angry at the person who told the story, then you're angry at yourself.
Why did I smile? Why didn't I say something? I always do this.
The event lasted a moment.
Your judgment of yourself starts taking up everything around it.
The laughter is over.
The argument with yourself isn't.
