In this episode we discuss Baby Animals’ "One Word", "Early Warning" and "Don't Tell Me What to Do". Which one will we choose but more importantly what are your thoughts on these songs and the artist…
So our listeners would have just heard who won the top 100 albums... albums of all time um and who got snubbed in our snubs episode and then we're up to this one now um we're going to talk about the baby animals uh not like baby animals but the band the baby animals um i i think probably best thing to do is let's get richard do a a deep dive on the history of the baby animals and then we'll talk about which three songs we're going to do
Fantastic.
Thank you.
The Baby Animals, an Australian hard rock band formed in Sydney and active from October 1989 to 1996, originally reformed in 2007.
But that is outside of the remit of our particular podcast.
They recorded two studio albums, the self-titled Baby Animal, September 91, which peaked at number one on the ARIA charts, and Shaped and Dangerous, strange title, August 1993, which got almost as high, peaking frustratingly at number two, Mario.
Can you guess what kept it off the number one spot to bring you two in right now?
I did not check that.
So 1993, let's say the album by Mr.
Big.
no um there were four different albums that had very short spots um in august 1993 u2's europa uh ub40 it wasn't called we only have one song it was called promises and lies diesel the lobbyist and billy jar river of dreams which went was number one all through september
Yeah.
Billy Joel's River of Dreams is probably the best of those four albums.
I would agree.
Yeah.
I mean, the other ones, I'm sure, are great, but they probably only really deserve one week each.
Yeah.
But I mean, did the second album of the Baby Animals deserve to go number one? Probably
not.
Anyway, Demarchi had gone to the UK in 1985 and released three solo singles in the Stock Akin and Wattman vein.
Before returning to Perth, she left the UK, apparently because the record company there wants a female pop star, not a rock star.
And she didn't like the direction they were pushing her in.
So fuck yous, I'm off to Oz.
It's as good a way as any to leave.
