What does laundry have to do with business development? If you've been following along or if you're brand new and just stumbled on this episode, we are business development coaches for lawyers at big firms, at small firms.

And sometimes during our one-to-one sessions about business development, we talk about laundry.

Sounds really glamorous, and I'm sure that's exactly what you pictured when you thought of a business development coach.

I have lots of conversations, particularly with our Corduroy Parental Leave offering, which is where Stage offers four free business development sessions for any lawyer coming back from a parental leave.

And I had a conversation recently with one of our Corduroy participants, And it reminds me of how much stuff we have going outside of work that impacts the work that we're actually doing.

Obviously, our job is to help our lawyers build a practice, help our lawyers to gain visibility, to grow.

go out there and network but if you have a house full of laundry and you are stressing out about dinner you're stressing out about walking the dog and cleaning the house and even picking up the poop in the backyard you're less likely to go and do anything that is now considered extra Jen and I will never push a lawyer to add more to their plate when it comes to business development specifically, if you can't get all of those administrative things in your house underway.

And this goes for any working professional in reality is to bring in as much help as you can afford.

We also talked about just going beyond being the one to do all of the meal prep.

Maybe you have tiny children right now and your best use of time would be sitting with them and playing with them and not making seven meals all day on Sunday when it's your only day off.

Or maybe you have three hours and that could be perfect time for them to go down for a nap and for you to do your billable time.

Not that I'm asking people to take a step back because you're coming back as a parent, but you've completed your term.

You don't have to continue to hold on to that membership, that leadership position, if it's actually not serving you.

Maybe you have a babysitter who could throw on your Roomba vacuum when they walk out the door.

Maybe you have a dog walker who could help clean up the backyard if that is something that's taking up a lot of your mental bandwidth.

And the examples that I am giving are conversations that I've had with real lawyers and not just my women lawyers.

I want to be very clear that I have both moms and dads come through our parental leave program and that this actually comes up all the time beyond just being a parent.

What do you have going on in your personal life that is weighing extra on you that we can help alleviate that? Because if I, as a business development coach, am suggesting that you take time out of your busy day to go to a networking event, but really all you're thinking about is the laundry and the meal prep and the homework, you're really not going to be as present in any circumstance, in any situation.
