Bring Me His Blood: Denouement

It is just about the end of my shift when Tom comes calling.

Tom Quaid is the former soldier whose brother fell victim to Queen Vera and her hounds.

He wants to know what happened.

We don't do this too much at the vigilance committee, but every once in a while someone gets curious, comes back.

There's not much to tell, but Tom's got a look on his face like he's got something to say.

I'm not surprised.

When there's a death in the family, you gotta say something to somebody, and not everybody has somebody to talk to.

It could be that I'm the only other person he knows with any connection to his brother's murder.

My uncle Rufus is the last real family I have, and a day's gonna come.

I don't know who I'll talk to when it does, so I offer to take a walk with Tom.

I guess I figure if I make myself the somebody that people can talk to, maybe God will return the favor when I'm the one in need.

What do I do now? That's what we all ask when we're the ones left behind.
