Derek Bullard sold his first company at 42. He had money, young twins, time to travel and coach soccer. Within 90 days he was miserable, and he spent the next year in a depression he couldn’t explain…
And what are the challenges for parents? Because it feels to me when kids have particular challenges, the services provided, they're not all amazing and going to work out.
So from your view, what are the challenges for parents and how do they get into a program that's really going to help their family?
Yeah, they've got to do a lot of research, but I would say there are multiple challenges.
Number one, there's a shortage of developmental pediatricians and clinical psychologists around the country that are really trained to diagnose autism.
But part of that increase in autism diagnosis is, number one, it's the tools that we have now that have developed over the last 10, 15 years as part of it.
But around the country, if you have a child, there's a suspicion of autism or your school recommends them to be tested.
There's less than a thousand developmental pediatricians, and these are folks that are trained to diagnose all around the country.
So one of the common things you hear is parents will sit on wait lists and wait.
You know, the earlier that you can intervene and you can determine kind of what the underlying cause is and what you're dealing with, the chances for successful outcomes increases exponentially.
get your child, you know, therapy and treatment, get diagnosed, then it varies, you know, state benefits, insurance benefits, it varies wildly throughout the country.
And then sometimes you've got multiple things that are needed, whether it's feature occupational therapy or ABA therapy or educational needs in the school.
So, you know, parents... are their child's best advocate, obviously, but they really, there's a lot of barriers system-wide that they have to overcome to get these things coordinated and moving in the right direction.
And we really want to be kind of a provider that's there, whether they choose us or not as their provider, we want to be there to help them to navigate that journey.
So, but just the one or two that I've laid out there are some of the more significant ones.
Yeah, and at this organization that you're leading today, I couldn't figure out exactly how many team members.
So at what scale can you help this community and is your vision to significantly grow it?
