“The Why’s of Mikvah” – Rabbi Steve Weiler (09/04/2026)

But I want to mention in the beginning of this message something that I just started thinking about, and that was water.

You know, water is to us something really plain.

You know, it has very little flavor.

It just kind of refreshes us.

Most people don't drink it most of the time.

I happen to at this point.

But we just have this thing about water being plain.

But in Scripture, water is not plain.

It's kind of interesting.

So Numbers 20, verse 11, Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice.

With his staff, water gushed out, and the community and its livestock drank.

Well, here's a case where water was just water, but it came out of a rock.

And so that makes water pretty special because there are very few rocks that have water in them.

But I really believe this rock that we hear about is a setup for Yeshua being the rock.

And so when we see this visual of this rock being hit twice, I believe that's another reason why God said later on to Moses and Aaron, because you did not trust in me so as to esteem me as holy in the eyes of Bnei Yisrael.

But I think it's also that in hitting that rock, instead of speaking to it, In a sense, he's hitting Yeshua.

And I feel that, you know, obviously Moses didn't see it that way, I'm sure, but I see it that way.

And I think that it makes it very, very interesting to understand.

The water that comes out is really a metaphor.

We see the water representing the Holy Spirit many times in Scripture.

And so it has all sorts of different importance.

Oftentimes, we'll see that Yeshua gives us living water.

And first, you trust in him, and then he gives you the Holy Spirit, which can be seen as the living water.

Now, with that in mind...

It says in Psalm 1, verse 3, he will be like a planted tree over streams of water, producing its fruit during its season.
