In this episode of Shift on Purpose, Peter and Paul explore the journey from collapse to clarity and the difficult inner work that can follow periods of significant change, loss and upheaval. From financial and business challenges to relationship breakdowns, health struggles and a loss of spirit, they reflect on the moments that can force us to confront who we are and how we’ve been living. Paul shares deeply personal reflections on the collapse of his marriage and the lessons that emerged through pain, journaling, self-forgiveness and learning to uncover what he calls **“the truth beneath the truth.”** Together, they discuss why clarity doesn’t necessarily come from immediately understanding what went wrong, but from accepting what has changed and allowing a new identity to emerge. They also explore the difference between persistence and surrender, the danger of numbing or doubling down on old patterns, and why the “school of hard knocks” can become one of our greatest teachers. Well, no one escapes collapse, do they? Eventually, it will get you.

So I think the introduction to my career was, you know, fresh out the gates, young pup, sprinting through life, forgetting that you need some downtime.

And, uh, I probably experienced a couple of years in a, um, a panic attack.

That's how you and I met, and that was my first wake-up call to like, you can't go a million miles-

Um, you will hit a brick wall.

So that was the first, uh, first eye-opening experience to, ooh, I am fallible.

And the, the other challenge for, for you, for me, for a lot of us who, who are traditionally trained in being hard driven, um, very intense work ethic, probably consumed by chasing a goal, chasing a goal, chasing a goal in, in our early days, um, w- we mistake, um, fierceness and determination and that, that, uh, mindset we just won't quit, we, we mistake that as, uh, strength and leadership-

when, when in fact it's often, um, in my case, a reckless ego.

Um, and, uh, remember that phrase crazy brave? [laughs] Like, I'm gonna charge ahead no matter what e- even if the, if the, the, uh, mission and focus is, is kind of suicidal.

It's like, uh, running into a brick wall 101 times.

Maybe on the 102nd time you learn there might be a better way.

But I think in society we do value, we respect strength.

If someone's going through a tough time and they're overcoming it, like how many times have you seen, I think it just happened in Origin, uh, last week, where a player in the top of his career has lost their father or lost a, a close...
