Pacheco's disease is caused by citicid alpha herpesvirus 1, a herpesvirus that primarily affects cytosine birds.
Classic clinical signs you may see include depression, anorexia, regurgitation, diarrhea, sudden death, and hepatitis and hepatic necrosis.
Some infected birds can become lifelong carriers and intermittently shed the virus, particularly during periods of stress similar to in our case.
Diagnosis can involve PCR, virus isolation, histopathology, and detection of characteristic viral inclusions.
The treatment is antiviral therapy, particularly aciclovir, which may be used in affected or exposed birds along with supportive care.
