You know, in today's society, we're in a need it now type of world you got to have it now i got to have the best car the best house the best job you know the biggest deer and social media has been the biggest liar in that and so you know when you see everything on social media um it's just a culture of where you got to have it now and i think that has been the biggest deception in life of what god really has intended for us and so you know when we have that idea that i need more land a bigger deer better equipment um more free time more success like so what what does that look like what if God's greatest blessing that he's given you is the current season that you're in? And so I just want to touch on where we'll start by saying, hey, where are you at currently versus what have you fallen into trap-wise that maybe you've seen in your life that you've kind of out looked and said, oh, I need to hone it back in.
yeah so you know this is going to be my third year hunting period um i've got a three-year-old at home a 14-month-old at home and so the first year absolutely hooked man um spent way more time in the woods than i should have to be honest um i really tried to dial back some this past season um it's it's hard because you do get on social media and you start seeing all these posts everybody killing these deer and just being out in the woods and then it's like i find myself just wishing i was out there more and um i mean it was a struggle to be honest with you you know i really had to take time do some self-reflection and be like i need to be where god has intended me to be right now you know trying to stay present um Honestly, I'm in a men's group that meets on Wednesday nights, and one of the guys in there, this is his phrase I'm going to coin, a momenteer, staying in the moment, keeping my eyes right in front of me, not trying to plan ahead too much of what I want to be doing later on, just staying right where God has me right now, look around, what opportunities is he presenting me with? And so I feel like for me personally, just trying to pull back family, God first, family, you know, get my priorities straight.
I will say I did a lot better this year doing that with turkey season.
It's like, I only got out there a few times.
I was chasing the same bird all season and I ended up getting him, but I wasn't leaving like my wife at home with the kids every single weekend and every single off day.
And so I felt like I was able to find a little bit of balance there.
i'm really hoping i can kind of transfer that into your season so
yeah you know it's funny like so you you've kind of been newer on the new side of hunting yeah and you started after you were married with children and we're on the flip side i've been hunting since i was seven and have been hunting for 30 years and when i really got into high school and college and even my first adult years when i was in the workforce I had all the time in the world to hunt and I took every advantage of it.
And in that season of life, it was all about how much can I be in the woods? I took vacation at work, planned on around hunting season.
Everything was, can I get in the woods? Where am I going to hunt? What state am I going to? And I took full advantage of that.
And so it was a huge, huge culture shock to me when I got married and now I have someone else that I have to think about.
And then, you know, which we discussed before we got married, you know, where my priorities were.
So I do have that in order.
So I thought until hunting season rolled around, and it was like, go, go, go, go, go.
And so we had a sit-down conversation, my wife and I, about, hey, let's plan it out ahead of time so we at least can be on the same page.
She said, I'm all for you going hunting.
I know you love it.
I want you to go hunting.
And before we were kids, we went hunting together.
And that was awesome.
If you ever have an opportunity to go take your wife or spouse or kids hunting, do that.
It's not something that's meant to be selfish.
It's just something meant to be shared.
But that season of life was just all about how big a deer can I kill.
