Ep 47: The Need for Speed

The father of the slow food movement, Carlo Petrini, passed away earlier this year.

The movement was founded as an antidote to fast food.

It began as a protest over the opening of a McDonald's in Rome.

It then spread globally and continues to promote the farming and consumption of local foods, focusing on quality rather than quantity and the reduction of food waste.

It's funny how we travel afar and enjoy local foods there, but sometimes ignore or forget what's around us at home.

Yet we do enjoy eating local produce in season with full flavour over the eating of often tasteless produce grown out of season remotely.

I just picked and ate tomatoes from the hanging basket outside my kitchen.

The flavour is unlike anything in the shops.

Simply delicious, grown and consumed locally.

Sadly, 40% of Britain's food is imported, including fruit and vegetables that could be grown here.

Though the supply chains for remotely grown foods are efficient and remarkably fast, their economic and environmental costs are high.

But many people want convenience and speed, whether it's fast food, next day deliveries, or just speeding to get to their destination much sooner.

Spoiler alert, they probably won't.
