The Car feature: Traffic register number certificates under review (what does it mean for South African motorists?)

Let me start off with what is a traffic register number, in other words.

So the National Traffic Information System, or the NATIS as we all know it, requires a unique number to identify natural persons who require any service from the natives.

For example, if you apply for a driving license or you want to renew your motor vehicle license and such, any service from natives, you would require a unique number for us to identify you on the natives.

I want you to think more about in the lines of a bank account.

If you have a bank account, how does the bank know it's you? You have an account number, isn't that so? So in the case of a South African citizen, on the natives, your identity number would be your account number on the natives by which we identify you.

So if you are a South African citizen and you do anything on natives, we require your identity number.

However, for people that are not South African but have legal status or permission to be in the country from the Department of Home Affairs, in other words, we're talking about our foreign nationals when we talk about natural persons.

And these people may not have yet obtained permanent resident status in the country.

So they don't have a South African ID.

For them, the Department of Transport issues them with a traffic register number so that they can do services that they are lawfully entitled to do on the native service, like obtain a driving license and such.

So traffic register numbers.

were created under the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations to enable persons who do not have a South African identity number but who are legally in the country to enable them to perform lawfully transport-related transactions.

I hope that explains what the traffic register number is.

So if you are a South African citizen, you don't have a TRN, it's when you are a foreign national citizen who have permission to be in the country from the Department of Home Affairs, that you have a traffic register number.
