Teresa WongGuestBlair HodgesHostWe're talking about a graphic novel that you wrote, Dear Scarlet: The Story of My Postpartum Depression, and I wanted to start with the cover.
At a distance, it sort of looks like a person laying down maybe in a field of flowers or something, and the closer you look, you realize it's a person surrounded by all of these apples, kind of buried in these apples.
Um, well, actually, it is a, a panel in the book, um, that I just kind of expanded to turn into the cover, but it's an image that kind of stuck with me, um, as I was drawing the book because, uh, it was probably just a couple of weeks into my life as a new mother, and, and I was having all these crazy dreams.
And in one of them, I had a dream that I was at the grocery store, and I was so tired that I climbed into a bin of apples, like, you know, those big boxes that they, they have sometimes-
... out, and, uh, and just, like, kind of laid there and, and tried to sleep while they kept pouring more and more apples [laughs] on top of me.
I remember waking up from that dream and thinking, "Well, that was weird," but also, when have I ever had a dream where I was so tired-
And it was just an indication to me of just how tired and worn out I was, like, um, a- as a new mother and, and with a newborn.
