Episode 265: How to Talk Your Book Into Existence

How did Dictate come about?

Well, that's a great question.

So basically, I was sitting here one day and I was thinking about how I've been wanting to write a book for so long and have all these ideas in my head.

But I don't know if this will be me all sort of telling myself, but I always feel like I don't know anything.

I'm like, I don't really know anything, but then I'll be on a podcast or I'll be talking to a friend and they'll ask me something and I'll talk for half an hour, you know? And I'll say, well, this, this, this, this, and that, and that.

And I realized that for me, especially, um, to sit down and just teach stuff, I can do that, but it's very hard.

And I realized that when people ask me things, that's when I can talk and share and tie things together.

So I had the idea, I was like, you know, like if you, if you hire a ghost writer they're very expensive you know we i had a client that used one before and it was every bit of 25 30 000 bucks and it took six to 12 months it was a big thing and so i started thinking well there's a way that we can use all this new ai to actually do that job so i basically started testing it and i have a background in development because a lot i always got kind of put over the programmers too so i kind of have a weird combo So I started testing it, and I built an AI interviewer named Silas, who I actually learned to really enjoy.

He was very fun to talk to.

And so he helped me write my first book.

And so then I started thinking, this would be a great product, right? And so that's kind of how it came to be.

And so I think so far we've helped about we're closing in on our 40th author.

Most of them are still in writing.

progress, but it's been incredible.

And I'm telling you, it's crazy how many people I just got one last night where the author wrote me to, again, to say that she was in tears.

I had so many people in tears because I didn't realize how many people there are out there who want that book and they feel like it's part of their life's calling, but they've been stuck because they sit there and type for, you know, they say it takes 500 hours to write a book from scratch.

So even if you did an hour per day, that's more than a year.

Two hours a day, it would still be about one year by the time you're done, right? So the way it's built now, I've got it down to about 10 to 15 hours.

And the separation, I think the part that's so cool is it's not just, the idea is, I guess the idea is it's your ideas, right? Right.

People hate AI in general because they think you're co-opting someone else's stuff.

You're just like, write me a blog post about this topic.

Right.

But when the ideas are yours, it's a completely unique experience.
