Did The Relationship Really Fail?

When I was 10 years old, my parents separated.

I didn't have the language for it then.

I just knew something had shifted.

Our apartment felt different.

The energy changed.

Conversations got quieter, more careful.

And eventually, one of them wasn't there anymore in the same way.

At that age, you don't sit down and analyze what's happening.

You don't think about compatibility or emotional dynamics.

You build a simple rule.

If you're unhappy, you leave.

That was the story I carried, not consciously at first.

It just lived somewhere in the background, shaping how I saw relationships.

There was an understanding that love had a limit, that something could be real and meaningful and still end.

And if it ended, maybe it meant it wasn't strong enough to stay.

And for a long time, I thought of separation as a failure.

Not in a judgmental way, just structurally.

Like two people try, and if they don't stay together, then something didn't work.

That was the script.

And it made sense, especially as a kid.

You want stability.

You want permanence.

You want to believe that if something is real, it lasts.

But life has a way of gently challenging the scripts we inherit.
