Something to say, actually, before I start, is that I am doing a lot of adaptation of classic books and novels, stories, and it would be nice as well perhaps just to briefly tell you about some of the message which is behind these stories.

As I've already said in the introduction, Oscar Wilde criticized Victorian society.

So when we talk about Queen Victoria, we're talking about the second half of the 19th century.

Now, you might say, "Yeah, but I don't know anything about the reign of Queen Victoria," but you probably do know what society was like in the second part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century before the First World War if you are from Western Europe because in most European societies, the situation was similar in that there was a very great divide between the wealthy and the poor.

So in this story, or this play rather, The Importance of Being Earnest, we're looking at a portrait of the wealthier part of English life and English society.

So as you're listening to the play, I'd like you to listen to some of the lines which are very funny and humorous, but at the same time, they are a criticism of that divide between the rich and the poor, the wealthy and those who do not have so much money.

And this is really upper class society, wealthy society, and I'd like you to listen for that.

At the end of the play, I'm going to just read a couple of phrases from the story for you to listen to again, um, as examples of that criticism of Victorian society.
