PerformHappy with Rebecca Smith

In this episode of the Perform Happy Podcast, Coach Rebecca answers a question from a parent whose seven year old gymnast has been stuck on her round off back handspring for nearly a year. Although…
I don't think her coaches did her any favors at the start by making her just go for it when she was physically able last summer.
But they did change that at the start of this year and since then have given her whatever support she asked for.
She'll do it on her own on a mat, which is so much harder physically, but completely refuses to do it unsupported on anything else, and this has been the case since December.
And the support is literally a couple of fingertips, but if she doesn't feel those fingers, she won't go.
So she's definitely physically capable, but totally unwilling or slash unable to go for it on a tumble track or a floor or even a trampoline without that little spot.
Coaches are giving her whatever support she asks for, which is good, but she's really had zero progress with it for the last year." She says, "We've done the superhero challenge because I thought her young brain could cope with and relate to that, and she did engage well with it, but it hasn't actually changed anything at gymnastics.
I know she's young and not being able to do it yet maybe isn't a big deal, but the lack of progress over such an extended period is frustrating for all of us, her included.
Any suggestions?" Okay, so I love this question because it is such a common struggle that these kids are very capable.
