Cardboard ChemistHostMoonhaven MageHostThis week my commander is Rin and Sari Inseparable, an adorable dog-cat creature with some great abilities.
I chose them for my commander to branch out of my mono or two-color decks, this week coming in with a three-color.
I'm hoping it will be a bit more manageable than when I played my avatar deck with only three colors instead of the full five, but I wanted to try and challenge myself.
Okay, so I found this deck with Ren and Sari on Moxfield from the creator MTG Thoughtcast, who also have a podcast.
Big thank you to them for posting their deck for us to use, and we'll add a link to their podcast below.
This deck is pretty expensive at over $1,300, but hopefully it will be worth it.
Rin in Ceri Inseparable is a 4-4 dog-cat legendary creature that costs 1 generic mana, 1 green, 1 white, and 1 red mana.
So, in total, it only costs 4 mana, which is great, but it does require 3 different colors, which is a bit more challenging.
Their first ability states that whenever I cast a dog spell, I create a 1-1 green cat creature token.
And guess what? Their second ability states that whenever I cast a cat spell, I create a 1-1 white dog creature token.
If I pay a red, white, and green mana, and then I tap Rin and Ceri, Rin and Ceri deals damage to any target equal to the number of dogs I control, and I gain life equal to the number of cats I control.
Theoretically, late in the game, I can be doing some massive amounts of damage if needed, and I can use this ability to boost my life if I'm in danger of bleeding out.
So what does this mean for the rest of the deck? What is my gameplan? Well, I would say the initial idea is overwhelming token creatures to start.
Most of the deck's creatures are indeed cats and dogs, and the majority of the ones that aren't explicitly either animal are shapeshifters or golems.
But every creature that I play is basically a two-for-one deal if I can get my commander out first.
Most of the creatures in this deck are cat creatures, so I will have to do some thinking in terms of which creature type I want when, let's say, I play a golem, when I have to choose a specific creature type.
But I think that getting out all the creature tokens will be extremely helpful in order to chip away at the chemists and block his attacks.
But the real goal is to get enough creatures to do some serious damage with my commander's last ability.
I think the wording allows me to do damage to the chemist himself, because it just says to deal damage to any target, not target creature, so I believe the chemist is fair game.
