Welcome back to The Parent Guide, the podcast that's dedicated to offering clear, compassionate, and clinically grounded advice for parents that are walking through the incredibly difficult landscape of teen behavioral challenges and in specific, pornography addiction.

And over the years, I've sat in my office with hundreds of families, parents, and adolescent boys.

And if you are listening to the episode today, I realize that there is a good chance that you are here because of a moment that likely shattered your sense of normal.

And maybe it was that you happened to glance at your son's phone screen at the wrong moment, or maybe you noticed it is his browser history or, or you found a hidden folder or caught him late at night in front of a glowing monitor.

And for most parents discovering that their teenage son is struggling with pornography, it isn't just a minor bump in the road, it feels like a sudden devastating punch straight to the gut.

It brings an immediate wave of panic and shame and worry and fear and profound confusion.

And I've watched parents sit on my couch in the office or on a Zoom session, wringing their hands and telling me about the sleepless nights that follow that terrible discovery.

So if you find yourself frantically checking his room when he leaves for school or if you've set up aggressive screen time limits and buy expensive monitoring software or you block the router, track his locations, you lie awake at night at 2 a.m. wondering, where did I go wrong as a parent and is he going to be okay? How did this happen in our home? Well, parents in that state of despair and fear, I get it.

So we look at the smartphones, we look at the high-speed Wi-Fi, the social media apps, sheer endless availability of adult content on the internet.

And as parents, our immediate instinctual reaction is to control the environment, to control the technology.

And we tell ourselves, well, if we can just get it all locked down, if we can get the router right at the router level, or if we can just confiscate the phone, take away all technology, if I can block every site, then that's the key.

Well, and just to clarify here, don't get me wrong, healthy boundaries with technology, they are important and they are needed.

But today I'm I want to talk about a vital truth that lies way beyond the screen or the technology.

And neurobiological and psychological research consistently shows us that pornography addiction in teenage boys is rarely just an issue of availability.

And more often than not, compulsive pornography use is a desperate attempt to self-medicate a deeper, a quieter, a far more painful ache, and that is internalized emotional distress.

So So today on the podcast, we are going to connect the dots between how young men process or better said, fail to process their emotions and their deep vulnerability to compulsive behavioral patterns.

And I want to contrast two distinct real world emotional trajectories for teen boys and discuss concrete evidence-based solutions, including tools you can use at home or with an outpatient clinician like the Recovery Toolbox for teens, and then for more intensive clinical interventions like our Star Guides Wilderness Therapy Program.

So parents, if you're feeling overwhelmed or isolated or hopeless right now, I hope that you find this to be a breath of fresh air and gives you something to be hopeful about.
