I think one of the biggest challenges facing healthcare systems around the world, not just in the United Kingdom, is the growing number of people living with long-term conditions like diabetes, obesity, asthma, chronic pain, mental health issues.

The waiting concept, whether you're waiting for surgery, whether you're waiting for rehabilitation or you're waiting for just specialist input or just simply waiting for life to improve, leaves many people feeling stuck.

But what if waiting didn't have to really mean possible deterioration or degeneration? What if those weeks or months can become an opportunity to build strength, to build resilience, confidence, and health? These are really important questions and these drive a lot of my research.

Today's guest has actually become one of those leading voices across the world, helping healthcare systems rethink exactly that possibility

Dr. Sunil Kumar is a lifestyle medicine physician, good friend of mine, anesthesiologist by background, educator, author, and now an international thought leader.

He leads lifestyle medicine education at the WHO's Collaborating Center for Public Health Education and Training at the Imperial College, London.

And more importantly, he's also part of the Forbes Council for Health Coaches, serves as a lead for prehabilitation and lifestyle medicine ambassador for the Personalized Care Institute, and right now is the lead editor for a forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Lifestyle Medicine, which I've had the opportunity to contribute as well.

All of this alongside a number of other roles that he leads, a number of other activities and centers he's advising.

So today, we would want to explore what lifestyle medicine means, why rehabilitation matters, and how can that concept be used in chronic pain and other long-term conditions, and what the future of healthcare could look like if we shifted from disease management to actually health creation.
