So this study really demonstrates the value of large-scale electronic health record data.

What are some of the advantages of using a dataset like Truvada compared to a prior, smaller, or limited studies? How might these datasets actually shape the future of research?

I think the biggest advantages are their scale and diversity, especially for these interdisciplinary questions.

These EHR datasets allow for greater access to data that may not be otherwise available in a specialty-specific or ophthalmology-specific dataset.

This lets us focus on a systemic outcome and also follow patients from multiple health systems.

Although prospective studies are also important and can carry a lot more nuance in different ways, large EHR datasets allow us to ask these same questions at scale.

And I think access to a greater variety of resources and data to ask these questions can help researchers to observe new patterns and build on the information we already know.
