In this episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó shares a parenting technique that sounds simple but can be really hard to practice: staying warm and present when a child is acting out to get a reaction.
The episode builds on the Nurtured Heart Approach. Parents give a calm, low-energy boring response to behavior that doesn't serve the child or the family, and save their high-energy warmth and praise for behavior that does. Dr. Anikó adds a twist she has been thinking about lately: flat and boring does not mean cold. Going quiet doesn't mean pulling back your love, using the silent treatment, or rejecting your child. It means keeping a warm, steady presence without feeding the cycle. This matters most with kids who are dopamine seekers, because they get the same hit from an argument as they do from praise.
She asks parents to consider whether they are prioritizing control or the child's development. She also explains why giving ourselves grace is what makes it possible to give grace to our kids, our friends, and our families. Using a story most of us know, waiting for someone who is running late, she shows how our personal histories shape the stories we tell about a moment. Those stories often have little to do with what is actually happening. Noticing them gives us enough distance to respond with intention instead of reacting on instinct.
Dr. Anikó then goes through practical tools for emotional regulation and calming the nervous system: silent meditation, getting out of your head and into your body, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, and 4-7-8 breathing, which she guides listeners through live. She explains how a parent's nervous system can either co-regulate a child's or act as "gasoline on the fire." She also talks about why remembering that we are not in danger is key to breaking out of fight-or-flight, especially for those of us who grew up in homes where yelling or conflict didn't feel safe.
She closes by returning to the heart-centered meditation taught to her by her teacher, Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson. It involves calling in the four qualities of the heart: unconditional love, oceanic limitless compassion, healing presence, and innate harmony. She describes it as the practice that has done the most to make warmth a way of being. She also explains how, as we become warmer and more present parents, we can start to become the person we needed as kids, and offer ourselves the same love and compassion.
