Now, I suppose part of the challenge with those phone calls and emails could be and how folks are using strategic planning to mean so many different things.

There are lots of different types of planning and somehow folks lump them all together under the umbrella of strategic planning.

And certainly you want to have all of your planning be as strategic as possible.

And the one that we're actually talking about today is usually it really has to do with time scale.

So are we talking about long-range planning, 10 years out or more, medium-range, three to five years, or shorter term, like your regular annual planning process, or even shorter, such as the next quarter, month, or even couple weeks, or even week? And each of these are important.

And today, and frankly, every time I say strategic planning, I am talking about a strategic planning process that helps an organization decides on its focus for the next three to five years.

So why do strategic planning in the first place? Nonprofit strategic planning helps your organization step back and consider where you are now and where you want to go.

It provides you with the opportunity to get reconnected with your stakeholders and to understand how they see your organization, its strengths and its areas for growth.

And ultimately, it's about building excitement and alignment throughout your organization for your vision, as well as the key goals that emerge as part of the process.

And as I said, that typical timeframe is that medium frame, three to five years.
