6 US Open wild cards were won last week at the collegiate playoff in Lake Nona. Plus, teams selected destinations for the 2027 ITA Kickoff weekend. We react to the wild card results, storybook…

Again, two topics for today w- are going to be the USTA wild card playoff, and then the draft.
So wild card playoff happened, happened last week at the USTA National Campus, the Collegiate Center, and I gotta say, I am mixed on this wild card playoff.
So the plus side is that the USTA is guaranteeing six wild cards to collegiate players.
You have two main draw singles, two main draw doubles, and then two qualifying singles wild cards.
So six wild cards is really great, and now guaranteeing those to collegiate players, where in the past it was really contingent upon how things fared at NCAAs, so you needed to have an American actually win NCAAs.
You need to have an American duo win NCAAs in doubles.
And then I would say, at least on the men's side, we would always get at least one qualifying wild card.
Now, again, th- I say this sort of, but just in recent memory, we typically get more than that on the men's side.
Like, some years you would have three, other years maybe less.
On the women's side it hasn't been as fruitful of qualifying wild cards, like one maybe max.
So in general, I definitely think this is providing more opportunity for American college players to play at the US Open.
On the other side of it, it's just, it's still kinda ho-hum.
