Baalbek's Trilithons, Lifting Theories and the Quarry with Santo Bartez — Part 3 of 4 | Classics Rotation

Santo Bartez explains why he does not believe the Romans built the megalithic base at Baalbek, pointing to the trilithons set about seven meters off the ground and a strange block that looks melted. He and the host trade theories on how such stones were lifted before visiting the Baalbek quarry, where giant blocks still sit. Santo argues that if Rome had this ability, we would see the same work across the Roman Empire. He also says that the manpower explanation fails because huge workforces would have needed food, water, housing and sanitation, and that this infrastructure has not been found at these sites. The host says her favorite idea, though not necessarily the most likely, is lifting with frequency, because granite is rich in quartz, which she connects to piezoelectricity. Santo doesn't think one answer fits every site. He says casting or softening stone wouldn't change its weight, and suggests his own idea of portable tools that lowered gravity in a small area. The host adds that Aswan's quarries are hundreds of miles from many Egyptian sites, and that copper and bronze are far softer than granite. At the quarry, Santo describes the South Stone, the stone of the pregnant woman and the forgotten monolith found in 2014. He says he thinks more blocks are still buried there, and that the terracing there was for mining rather than farming. He credits one local man with cleaning up what had been a dumping ground and says the Romans later used the quarry as a necropolis. These are the speakers' own views.
