Planning a Colorado muzzleloader hunt? In this episode of the Muzzle-Loaders Podcast, Hunter and Jordan break down Colorado muzzleloader season, including key regulations, season dates, equipment…
And Jordan, do you want to walk us through some of those regs and just let folks know what they're going to be equipment wise, what the restrictions are on the equipment they can use and all that good stuff?
sure so primarily the most important thing to note i would say is you're using open sights not a scope i think game wardens are going to get on you real quick if you show up with one of those among other things you can use a 209 primer which is great there's also some bullet regulations if you're hunting deer or pronghorn or bear you must use conical bullets that are a minimum of 40 caliber Um, if you're going to use a patch and round ball, that is going to be a 50 caliber.
Um, and for elk, um, it's going to be a minimum of 50 caliber as well.
Awesome.
Okay.
And then as far as the powder goes, what kind of powders can you use and not use in Colorado?
Well, you can use black powder, be that true black powder or black powder substitutes, which are really the most common, I would say.
You can definitely not use smokeless powder, which most black powder guns cannot use those.
So it'd be doubly bad for regulations and for your own safety.
Very true.
Very true.
Now that does, you know, bring up one interesting point, I think, which is that with the new Endura being such a hot topic right now, you know, you can use that gun, but you'd have to use Blackhorn, right? Instead of using, you couldn't use one of the smokeless alternatives, right?
That is true.
Yeah, you could use some Blackhorn.
Hopefully you can get your hands on some if you don't have some already.
And you also won't be using the Enduro for an elk hunt being a .45 caliber at this time.
Yes, that's a good point.
Yeah.
Yeah, they do.
So you're going to be using loose black powder only, which, you know, if you use pelletized powder and you really like doing that, I understand.
But you can really tailor your load with loose black powder a lot more.
So a lot of guys, a lot of people are really into that.
Yeah.
