There are things you might assume about practicing, using a metronome, what progress is supposed to look like, and more that you'll only learn the truth about once you start practicing well. In this…
hello and welcome back my name is David Lane it is great to be with you once again this is episode number 180 now I've shared a lot of things over the past several years including many things this year about what good practice is and what are some things that you can do that actually lead to good practice but let me just start off for the sake of today just a brief definition how do I define good practice It's a very simple definition, one sentence.
This wasn't on my list, but the fact that you get progress every single session might be a surprise.
Assuming that you're losing weight deliberately, but in a healthy way that's more like two to four pounds a month.
Well, if you're losing a half pound per week, not only will you not see much progress if you step on the scale every day, it might not be very good for you because you don't always have the same kinds of good days and bad days.
And things like lack of sleep, stress, how much water you had, all these things kind of come into play and you might have done everything right one day, go to sleep and wake up a half pound heavier the next day.
so you don't want to look too much into that you want to be seeing how you're doing one month at a time and i have thought in the past that maybe practice was similar to that and i probably thought that because i did experience that very reality it seems like i couldn't tell if i was making any progress after one day or two days and sometimes not after a week but after working on the same piece for a month oh yes i could see the progress then But once I got to my 20s, I made it my mission to learn the art of practice, what makes for practice to be more efficient.
Because I never have been and never will be someone who can devote four, five, six hours a day of practice.
So it's been super important for me to learn how I can use every minute of my time efficiently.
And what I found happens is that when you practice a certain way with that knowledge, of what actually makes good practice.
You can see obvious improvement every time you practice from the beginning of the day to the end of the day.
