My beloved brothers and sisters, in this age of social media, we have lost something called accountability.
Many people feel that perhaps social media has brought about more accountability than before, but in actual fact it has brought about more slander, accusation, belittlement, insult, and abuse.
If you browse social media, you will find that the principles of the Quran regarding verification, regarding giving the benefit of the doubt to a person, regarding carefully looking into evidence before you make an utterance have been sidelined.
And the reason is people hide behind a screen or a keyboard to say whatever they want, thinking that no one is going to catch them and they won't actually pay a price for it, and they will get away with it.
However, as much as it is very important for us to hold people accountable and responsible for whatever they do, whatever they utter, and so on, especially when they are in positions of authority on any level, it is also important for us not to slander or make accusations because of the original rule that states that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
But in this day and age, everyone is guilty until proven innocent has become more of an accepted statement than what is actually correct.
So if someone were to say something on social media and you were to see it, and you don't even know the person they're talking about, you don't know them at all.
Umar ibn al-Khattab radhiAllahu anhu says, "If you haven't done business with a person, or you haven't lived with them, or you haven't traveled with them, you don't know them." So you might know of them, you might know their name and maybe a few things, but you can't claim to know someone unless you've lived with them, done business with them, or what was the third one?
Traveled.
So in today's day and age, you will notice that we have comments and posts that are made based on the first rumor that has spread about something in order to try and gain what is known as likes and follows.
And this is a disease because in Islam, we should not run behind likes and follows.
Yesterday, I met a young man, and he made or they asked to make a dua for him that he serve the deen and that he is successful in the deen.
And on top of that, may Allah make you successful in the dunya as well." So they were surprised that we're asking him to make a dua for the deen, and he did.
The reason is Allah Almighty Himself says one of the best duas you can make, Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil akhirati hasanah, wa qina azaban-nar.
What is that goodness? All forms of goodness, including your wealth, your sustenance, your health, your ability to worship Allah is also goodness in the dunya.
