In this episode of Real Birth Stories, midwife Kathy Fray shares the birth story of “Jamy” (pseudonym), an AMA (advanced maternal age) mother with a history that brought several interesting considerations into her pregnancy and birth.
Jamy had a history of rapid births, along with a previous history of tuberculosis (TB) and a known uterine fibroid (a benign growth of the muscular wall of the uterus which, depending on its size and position, can sometimes influence pregnancy, fetal position, labour and birth).
With her previous fast labors very much part of the planning, Jamy’s story is a great example of how a woman’s previous obstetric and medical history can help inform maternity care without necessarily determining how her next birth will unfold.
Following birth, her baby also developed breast milk jaundice - the typically mild and prolonged form of jaundice sometimes seen in otherwise healthy, thriving breastfed babies, and unlike regular "jaundice”.
As always, this Real Birth Story is shared for education - looking at the decisions, events and clinical considerations surrounding one individual woman’s pregnancy, labor, birth and early postnatal experience.
