In this episode, host Andrew Davidson speaks with Brian Jones, President of Merrick Bank, about how to grow a business while staying true to its mission. Brian shares his career journey, with over…
Yeah, I mean, uh, Cardworks began in, uh, nineteen eighty-seven, I believe, with its serving, servicing business.
I mean, could you tell us a bit about Cardworks and what was the origin story of Merrick Bank?
Um, started by a great entrepreneur who's still the, you know, the chairman of the bank and the chairman of the holding company, Don Berman.
Uh, he and a few partners started the servicing business initially, and, uh, after several years, they decided to come out here to Utah and start a bank.
So it was, you know, it was an obvious, to me anyway, maybe to Don, uh, uh, evolution of, you know, the expertise that Cardworks has in, in payments and in, uh, credit cards to start an issuing bank, and that's, that's what he did.
And so, uh, Merrick's been issuing credit cards now since nineteen ninety-seven and focused on the, you know, subprime, non-prime consumer.
And, you know, that, that's, that was the insight that I think Don had was to, you know, find this, uh, this demographic, uh, that, that's a little underserved, uh, and, and try to serve that, and has been very successful at doing it.
