Nicole named self-pity the most terrible inner state available to a person Terrible carries a specific meaning here Grief is more acute Genuine fear is more disorienting What makes self-pity terrible is something different It's the most resistant, the most disguised and the most quietly permanent of the states that obstruct development It persists without natural term It requires no new external event to sustain itself It feels, from inside, like depth and sensitivity And it has a quality the other states lack It is comfortable.

Two kinds of suffering There are two categorically different kinds of suffering.

This kind of suffering is the raw material from which genuine development is made.

It requires attention, and it requires the willingness to remain in contact with difficulty without extracting from it the secondary benefit that makes self-pity so stable.

Force is consumed in maintaining that position, generating its narrative, and returning to it in imagination.

A person who's suffered greatly in this second sense isn't more developed for having done so.

They're more depleted and more entrenched in the position that produced the depletion.

The depth self-pity appears to produce is the depth of worn grooves, not of genuine being.

What distinguishes it from ordinary mechanical suffering, from the passing irritation or momentary hurt, is that it has been converted from a reaction into a position.
