You Are Not Alone: A Powerful Story of Addiction, Suicide, Faith, and Recovery with Kate Parson

What happens when someone who's battled addiction, mental illness, trauma, and suicide attempts refuses to let their story end there? In this powerful episode of Managing Difficult People, host Adam Holbrook sits down with Kate Parsons, a nationally recognized recovery advocate, mental health educator, and faith-based leader, for an honest conversation about addiction, bipolar disorder, suicide prevention, recovery, and the hope that's possible even after life's darkest moments. Kate openly shares her personal journey, from experimenting with alcohol as a teenager to battling cocaine addiction, living with bipolar disorder, surviving suicide attempts, and eventually relapsing after nearly two decades of sobriety during the COVID-19 pandemic. She explains the difference between simply being sober and truly living in recovery, emphasizing why healing the underlying emotional wounds is just as important as overcoming substance use. Together, Adam and Kate explore the stigma surrounding mental health, why so many people suffer in silence, the life-changing impact of asking for help, and how vulnerability creates connection instead of weakness. They also discuss practical tools for recovery, including Alcoholics Anonymous, peer support, faith, community, recovery capital, suicide prevention, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who genuinely care about your future. One of the most moving moments of the conversation centers on Kate's journey back to faith. Rather than finding healing through religion alone, she discovered a deeply personal relationship with God that transformed her recovery and gave her a renewed sense of purpose. Today, she equips churches, organizations, and communities across Tennessee with training in mental health, addiction recovery, trauma-informed care, and suicide prevention, helping others become a source of hope for those who are struggling. If you or someone you love is battling addiction, mental illness, depression, or thoughts of suicide, this episode offers practical encouragement, real-world resources, and a powerful reminder that recovery is possible. You are never beyond hope, and you never have to walk the journey alone. Stronger leadership starts with better communication. Learn how to manage conflict, set boundaries, and lead with confidence.
