It's true that, you know, your Google Maps says it's going to take 20 extra minutes.

So I was a diplomat for 10 years to working on foreign policy overseas in different contexts.

And then I worked on domestic politics first in the Senate and then also working with the White House.

And so there was a sense of urgency that is not just connected to making money, to doing something that's like selfish.

And the thing that I've only really saw in retrospect, looking back at that part of my career, is that there is something that was lodged pretty deep in my ego around that too.

It was a sense of like, I need to be the kind of person who's really working hard for people.

I need to be the kind of person who's pushing forward these projects and hitting the deadlines.

And because there was this sense of the end goal being really important, being really impactful.

What winds up happening, and I've seen this across all kinds of nonprofits and government agencies that have these good missions, is the way that we treat one another starts to become secondary.
