Today’s guest is Chris Jagger: musician, actor, writer, and younger brother of Mick Jagger.
Chris grew up in Dartford in the post-war years, in a family that would unexpectedly find itself at the centre of one of the great cultural revolutions of the 20th century. But while his older brother’s name would become synonymous with rock ‘n’ roll, Chris embarked on a remarkably eclectic journey of his own through fashion, travel, acting, journalism, and music.
In this conversation, Chris looks back on his childhood with Mick, the earliest days of The Rolling Stones, and the story behind his famous victory in a Mick Jagger lookalike competition in 1964. He recalls the extraordinary creative scene of 1960s London, making clothes and encountering musicians, artists and writers, before travelling through Europe, the Middle East and India, where he studied Indian music and crossed paths with some remarkable characters.
He also tells stories from Stargroves, where he was living while the Stones recorded Sticky Fingers, and discusses his own long musical career, and the importance of forging an identity away from his famous surname.
We talk about his 2021 autobiography Talking To Myself, the stories and memories that went into it, and how writing the book inspired his latest album, ‘Mixing Up The Medicine’. And, at the other end of the story, Chris reflects on what it’s like to still make music with his brother - including their recent duet, ‘Anyone Seen My Heart’.
It’s a unique and insightful conversation with a brilliant raconteur, full of great stories, extraordinary characters, and fascinating memories.
