How we see ourselves can affect how we handle difficulty before we even realize it. This micro episode looks at the difference between meeting challenges with a sense of capability and expecting…
At the core of this approach is the understanding that our self-concept and the beliefs that go with that are incredibly powerful in determining how we navigate our life.
If we think that we're capable of anything...
No matter what we run into, we don't stop.
If we have a hard time in a class in school, we go, well, I can learn that.
I'm capable of anything.
If we run into a challenge in relationships, if we run into a challenge at work, We find ways to overcome that challenge.
We're automatically resilient because we have the sense of ourself that we can overcome, that we are capable of that.
And that's what we want in all areas of our life.
Conversely, if we have that sense of things are always going to go wrong, the other shoe is going to fall, there's no way I can do it, I'm not capable, the outcomes are pretty obvious.
And we are stopped by such small things, small from the perspective of somebody that has that resilient point of view.
If we have that sense of, I'm not capable, it doesn't take much to trigger that, and that in turn then shuts down our system.
It's not that our system is inherently incapable.
It is that the filter that we view ourselves through, and that we view our world through, our life through, very quickly triggers some shutting down of our system.
