With over 37,000 skydives behind him, Pete Allum still calls himself a beginner and that's the whole point. For Pete, flying well was never about chasing bigger suits or rushing to the next milestone…

My next question to you is, like, do you think wingsuit pilots spend enough time thinking about sort of what happens after deployment? 'Cause I mean, I know you say that you're like a baby wingsuiter, and maybe in the grand scheme-

It's designed to have good opening characteristics, and, uh, that's something... it's actually the decision that I made.

Uh, I, I jumped to 120 Horizon and thought, "Yeah, it's a fun canopy, but that's not the reason why I'm getting this canopy.

I'm getting this canopy because I want it to open well for me as I steadily upsize." And, uh, so now I'm on a 135, which for me is the biggest canopy, uh, in my stable, and, um- I, I watch a lot of people as they're pr- uh, sort of jumping wingsuits struggling with their landings.

And if I think about it, it's probably because they don't have the right skills with any canopy.

The manufacturers are doing an incredible job of trying to make canopies that not only do they open well, they pack small, but they also fly well.

Uh, and so I think it's every canopy pilot's, um, job, especially wingsuiters, to learn how their parachute works.

And let the... let's let the canopy designers keep on improving their work, and what we can do as pilots is improve our technique, and we can get really curious about, "Hey, you know, how does this parachute work?" And give it to your canopy coach.

Let them figure it out before, because they may not have jumped a wingsuit canopy.

And, uh, a lot of people, they, they see people coming in, they're like, they don't even understand the subtle differences.

Uh, and a lot of people tell me, "Oh, I have to make, you know, I have to add speed to make this work." And I'm like, "Actually, you don't." [chuckles] You know, every canopy that's out there, uh, is designed to, to be landed with its natural speed as well.

And it's a fun little curious path to go down about how do I make this parachute work? Yeah.
