This week on Last to Leave, Zoey Danielson & Heather Elaine Abbott, investigate the demonic sound files that create the sonic texture of the indie horror film, Undertone, with the help of the film's…

She plays the skeptic role in her podcast duo that talks about supernatural events.
But of course, because she's the naysayer, when they get an email to their podcast with a bunch of creepy weird recordings the demon gets her
no they're they haunted your audio files but yeah i thought undertone was really interesting it affected me a lot more than i expected just knowing that it was going to be a movie about a podcast i was like okay like that's i'd
Spend a lot of time with podcasts, obviously, because the show, how am I going to feel about this? Yeah.
I think ultimately, I feel like it would have been even better as an audio drama, which I don't know if you've ever listened to any, but I've listened to a few horror audio dramas before that like, rip like the black tapes is a really good one there's one called like rapids i think that i like these are like from years ago but yeah i feel like it might have been a little bit more successful just as an audio drama because the visuals are you know pretty simple sure we're inside a house the whole movie and that editor was working hard trying to keep the visuals moving yeah as we're listening to these creepy audio files it's like sink hallway yeah
I sort of had the feeling of like waiting for something to like pop out and I kind of feel like that almost distracted me a touch from the audiophiles themselves yeah it was so fun to watch a horror movie about a podcast how fun obviously that hit really close to home
at any time we could think we're about to interview a grip and surprise it is now actually a demon
the strongest part about undertone is the sound design and the score because they are really doing the heavy lifting obviously along with the acting but like we mostly see Evie and then her co-host we only ever hear his voice we never even see his face fun fact the actor who is the voice of the co-host he was the fiance and something very bad is going to happen which I think both came out around the same time this year and I was like he's having a moment
He has a smaller part in like the last couple seasons, but always one of the very reliable sort of like funny side characters.
I thought he was great in both this film and in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
