If you were to walk out of Exit 10 of Gangnam Station on a Monday night in May 2016, you would find yourself in the middle of a bustling nightlife.
The area of Seocho-dong, where we will be focusing today, is also known as the Seocho Judicial Town because it's home to the Central District Court, Supreme Court, and High Court.
But this judicial town is also where you might find the best high-end shopping, art centers, and gorgeous museums.
Toward the end of Seocho-dong, that neighbor's Gangnam station, you'll find a place that is always alive.
The nightlife is restrained to its areas, and if you were to walk into the entrance of the Namgyeong building, all of that metropolitan noise would just go quiet.
On the first floor of this four-story commercial building is a beef tartare restaurant known as a yukhoe.
Because these buildings are built to just cram as many businesses as they can into one place and as many paying customers into the building as possible, the actual utility spaces are pushed to corners of the building like the bathroom for customers.
Halfway up a stairwell, on a landing between the first and second floor, was a tiny unisex bathroom.
There are no windows, no direct line of sight from the streets, and when you walk inside, there's just a small common area to the bathroom with a porcelain sink, a mirror, and then the space is split between a urinal on one side and a toilet stall on the other.
Because the walls are so thin, if you're standing inside the bathroom, you could hear everything in the hallway.
At exactly 11.42 p.m. that Monday night, May 16, 2016, a 34-year-old man named Kim Sung-min walked up the stairs.
He was wearing dark clothes and his hand was deep in his pocket, clutching a large 30-centimeter commercial kitchen knife that he had taken from the job he had just left.
Kim Sung-min did not immediately go into the bathroom, although some reports stated that he hid in the bathroom for the entirety of the night.
Later, police would clarify that instead he spent the first 51 minutes loitering right outside on the stairwell landing.
He entered the unisex bathroom, went straight into the stall, sat down on the toilet seat, and sat and waited in the dark.
From the moment he went inside, six more people would come in and use the bathroom.
All of those six people were men, adult men, who used the urinal, hopefully washed their hands, and then left.
