[whimsical music] "Welcome back to Lower Starry School class,” rang out the bright voice of Miss Fudge, the English teacher.

“I trust you’ve all enjoyed your summer holidays." “Yes, Miss Fudge,” the class called back.

“And I trust you’re all returning well rested and ready to learn lots and lots this school year." “Yes, Miss Fudge.” “And I trust that you’ve all brought your holiday homework projects in." “Yes, Miss Fudge,” they all called out.

At least, almost everyone did.

Everyone, that is, except for Charlie.

Instead, Charlie’s eyes flew open as she looked around in panic at her classmates.

There on their desks, their summer holiday projects sat waiting, looking rather smug.

One kid had brought a ring binder full of notes.

Another had decorated a beautiful leather notebook with beads and feathers.

Even her best friend Timmy, who was sitting right next to her, had what appeared to be a 3D model of a spaceship on his desk.

How had she not spotted that when she arrived? She must have been, like, totally zoned out.

“Timmy,” she hissed out of the corner of her mouth.

“What’s this holiday homework Miss Fudge is talking about?” “Our summer book project,” Timmy told her.

“You know, where we read a bunch of books over the holidays, then design something or make a presentation inspired by a favorite one.” Timmy’s eyes grew large behind his glasses lenses.

He had a terrible fear of breaking rules.

“Oh, no, Charlie,” he whispered.

“You didn’t forget, did you?” Well, of course she’d forgotten, but who could blame her? Holidays were for kicking back and relaxing and playing with your mates, weren’t they? Not for doing schoolwork.

Charlie frowned and pointed at Timmy’s model spaceship.

“You mean that’s based on a book?” she asked.

Timmy grinned proudly.

“Yeah, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

I spent days and days doing all this papier-mâché, and look, the spaceship doors even open.

[spaceship doors opening] Neat, right?" “Yeah, very neat,” Charlie said.

Timmy’s eyes got all scaredy again.

“Oh, Charlie,” he whispered.
