So as we are faced with the truth of Luke chapter 10, verses 25 through 37, the first step, if we are to understand that we are really redeemed, the really redeemed accept Christ.
Self-inflicted wounds.
So a lawyer had three primary responsibilities.
And these responsibilities were studying and interpreting the law, instructing the Hebrew youth in the law, and they could even act As a judge.
So like this is not your Sunday school teacher.
This is somebody with great power and ability with interpreting the law that involved consequences in everyday people's life.
And what is that question? How? In fact, look at the wording of this.
Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Now, from the very beginning of this conversation, what do you see is wrong with the question that the lawyer asked? One very big problem.
What shall I do... to inherit eternal life.
So in the mindset of this lawyer, what did he think? In his mind, he thought he could be good enough to go to heaven and be okay with God.
And you see the problem with this because when you inherit something, what does that generally imply? Blood.
Blood.
familial relationship there.
That's what that implies.
It doesn't imply doing, because when you have family members, let's be honest, some of them are awful, but you still love them and take care of them.
So the lawyer asked this question and notice the wording in verse 26.
It says, what is written in the law and what is written? Your reading of it, right? So in this very graceful, very truthful, very gentle way, Jesus is trying to get this lawyer who knows everything to admit that he doesn't know the one thing that he needs to be saved.
He says, what is written in the law? Why? Because he was a...
Lawyer.
He always knew how to speak their language.
And a lawyer speaks the language of the law.
