This was very noticeable that Ashley Hinson, the nominee for Senate, was a no-show.

Normally, the Senate candidate in a state would show up when either the president or vice president comes to town, even if they had to cancel other plans to do it.

But the speakers were Attorney General Brenna Byrd, the candidate for governor, Zach Lane, the candidate in the fourth congressional district, Chris McGowan.

And Brenna Byrd said near the beginning of her remarks, you know, that she was very excited to have the vice president there.

Why would the vice president go there instead of a city in central or even eastern Iowa?

I'm working on a piece about this that I feel that this rally reflects the broader concern that Republicans have about turnout.

And I think that Iowa's fourth congressional district, even though it's not competitive as a U.S. House race, it's very important for Republicans statewide to have high Republican turnout in those heavily GOP counties in western Iowa and northwest Iowa.

So I think it's no accident that they sent Vance to this very red area of the state rather than a more competitive, swingy area, because J.D. Vance is more popular with the MAGA Republican base than he is with the broader electorate as a whole.

So I see this whole rally as about mobilizing Republicans rather than persuading any swing voters.
And several of the speakers emphasized how important it was for Republicans to vote in November.
Chris McGowan said, quote, what we're going to do, and especially in Iowa, for we're going to turn out to make sure that the rest of the state carries Zach Lane to victory, end quote.

Bob and I talked about this on last week's show when we were talking about that midterm Republican convention in Dallas.

Brenna Byrd also in her remarks, she mentioned that she's the first Republican to serve as Iowa Attorney General since 1978.
