Does too much sodium hurt carb absorption? Are runners overdoing electrolytes? I went looking for the research on how much sodium runners need per hour and whether stacking drink mixes, gels, and salt…

Um, it was a sports dietician that was talking about how runners have gotten pretty aggressive with sodium, and that a lot of us are probably overdoing it.

I've also seen a lot of everyday runners on social media talking about how much sodium they're taking in and some of them saying that too much of it can mess with how your stomach absorbs carbs, and I'm sure that you've seen a lot of the same stuff out there.

There's a lot of random information floating around on the internet, and to be honest, it's kind of hard to know what's real and what's not.

To put that in perspective, most dietary guidelines say that you should keep your sodium intake ar- around 2,300 to 2,400 milligrams for the whole day.

So in that example, you'd be getting most of a day's worth of sodium in just a single hour of running.

On top of that, if it's true that too much sodium gets in the way of absorbing carbs, then all of that extra salt could be working against the fueling plan that you worked so hard to put together.

So that was gonna be the episode, and I thought it was pretty straightforward until I started digging.
