Flora PeyvandiGuestJulia Sandrin GowerHostAs I've mentioned, the ISTA established the Global Public Affairs Committee in 2024.

And also the reason why I'm happy, because finally, after lots of discussion, we can raise the age and we don't have two of us.

was needed the creation was important because we are living in a very very important time of hemostasis and thrombosis with new technologies and the novelty in terms of diagnosis and therapeutics we need to think about where we are in terms of the scientific community and whether we are in line with the regulatory agency and whether we are looking properly on the need of our patients and trying to make a harmonization and to think about the future.

And the only thing I'll say is that for a long time, ISTH's priority was the science we created within the health institutions, within the laboratories, within our research structures.

And it became very important after a while to pursue translating that science into the greater good, because it does no good to do science and make advances in silos.

that then don't really communicate or affect health access and policy across the world.

So this committee has given ISTH an opportunity to establish formal relationships with other governing bodies, other foundations, other advocacy organizations, public policy organizations, world health organizations, so that our science can have the impact we need it to have in global decision-making with respect to health and policy.

Julie, if I can add an example, we are a non-state actor at the World Health Organization.

And World Health Organization is leading an initiative that frames menstruation as a crucial human right and health issue rather than a hygiene issue, which it had been in the past.

And as a non-state actor with the WHO and as an organization that currently is prioritizing women's health, we have a seat at that table.

That's an example of why this committee and the liaisons that this committee is facilitating is really important for the ISTH.
What role do public affairs and advocacy initiatives play in an organization like the ISTH and why is it important to engage with them? You're talking about this global scale and having a voice in these important global institutions on how we can improve patients' lives, but also target the correct problems out there.
