Iowa Business Report Thursday Edition October 08, 2026 National financial journalist Dennis Kneale on the impact of the Federal Reserve on the nation's economy.
Jeff SteinHostAll the bond markets is that the Fed will hold rates where they are now at this next meeting, and then raise them in December after the election and before, you know, the start of the new year.
And I think instead, though, that the punk job number that came in just the other day, and then other data that show certain other measures of inflation are down to 1.9%.
You know, certain things like that.
And, uh, y- you kind of think, did the Fed overdo it when they just raised rates another quarter point? Because why is it that the Fed assumes that if the economy is growing strongly, that that instantly means there's inflation? If productivity is up thanks to AI advances and other technology advances, then you can grow without this inflation in prices.
And right now there's way too much, you know, glum, bleak outlook.
People are almost stuck in that rut.

Dennis Kneale's latest book is Oregoners: How One State Chased Away Businesses and People.
