INSIGHT: Self-Regulation Before You Have the Words

There's a part of us that disappears, not dramatically, not dangerously.

But something in us has known, since we were very young, how to find its way toward space, toward quiet, toward room to breathe.

And it learned to do this long before anyone taught us the word regulation.

When I was a boy in South Carolina, I used to just vanish out the door, down to the creek, into the trees, No plan.

No language for what I was doing.

But my body did something that I now recognize as brilliant.

It found ways to get what it needed without anyone showing it how.

I think about that boy in the woods.

He didn't know about the autonomic nervous system.

He didn't know the word co-regulation or window of tolerance.

But his body understood something essential.

When the house gets loud, when the tension builds, when the air gets thick with whatever the adults are carrying, we need to move.

So he moved.

And in that moving, something settled.

Not because he was fixing anything, but because his system was creating the conditions for something else to come forward.

In IFS, we talk about parts, protectors that manage, firefighters that react, exiles that carry pain.

But underneath all of that, there's self.

And self has a quality we sometimes call spaciousness, room to breathe.

Room to notice.

Room to just be.

Before we have language for any of this, I believe our systems are already reaching for that quality.

Not consciously.

Not with technique.

Just intuitively.

Think about a child who goes quiet after a fight in the house.
