Richard Parker is the Chairman at Applied Underwriters Aerospace, LLC, where he runs the space team. He recently joined Chris Hampshire for a special episode of *In the Know: Ask the Expert,* which…
Chris HampshireHostI don't have a distinguished list of pretty much anything, but I run the space team at Applied, Applied as a specialty insurer, US-based.

We're going to talk about a very cool topic today, and that is the topic of space insurance.

And I see we've already got a question that we're going to get into in a second about a recent incident, which I think will be very, very interesting.

Before we get into that, I think, Richard, it'd be helpful to kind of maybe provide more of a broader perspective on the sector that you're in.

So can you provide those of us who work in traditional P&C work, help us understand how is space insurance actually structured? Is it more like aviation insurance, marine cargo, or is it something else entirely?
Yeah, we're sort of in between, I would say, between marine and aviation, but with some big differences.
That includes the cost of the launch vehicle, typically, if you're insuring a launch.
But, you know, it's all about that journey into space and the asset, the spacecraft, getting to space and fulfilling its mission.
sort of slightly different and sort of more similar to aviation maybe is that or different from aviation in a way, is that we don't have a lot of loss history.
And we really can pick any type of coverage The spacecraft are always different.
