I Am Better Than Him

One verse: Surah Al-A'raf, verse 12. Allah asks Iblis what prevented him from prostrating, and Iblis answers with a claim — I am better than him, You created me from fire and created him from clay. He refused, and then defended the refusal by claiming he was the better of the two. The episode holds one question the whole way through: when someone corrects me, do I consider whether they are right, or do I dismiss them because of who they are? Ibn Kathir's point, paraphrased and attributed in the episode: the excuse is worse than the offence, because Iblis was not confessing — he was explaining why the command should not have applied to him. The superiority was not an aside. It was the reason he gave for not doing what he was told. Sahih Muslim 91a then puts a definition on it: pride is disdaining the truth and contempt for the people — asked in the context of a man who likes fine dress and fine shoes, which the narration is explicit is not what is meant. And a boundary: a person correcting you is not the same as Allah commanding you. You may ask for evidence, disagree respectfully, and keep reasonable limits. The question is only whether someone's age or standing is stopping you from giving what they said a fair hearing. It closes with one practice — pause, ask what is true, and if it is right acknowledge it and change one concrete thing — then a short look ahead to 7:23, where Adam and his wife answer the opposite way, and an original du'a.
